Mikel Smith Koon is Conn Maciel Carey LLP’s first Chief Operating Officer. She brings over 20 years of experience in business management including 10 years in law firm management, focusing on operations and human resources.

As the COO, Ms. Koon manages CMC’s day-to-day operational efficiency by identifying key procedural issues and crafting core processes to improve essential business functions that align with the firm's objectives. She also oversees the administrative divisions of the firm including marketing, accounting, IT, and human resources.  As part of the firm leadership team, she works directly with the Managing Partners, playing a pivotal role in developing and executing CMC’s strategic plan as the firm continues to expand.

Ms. Koon has an entrepreneurial spirit with special expertise in project and people management. Prior to joining the legal industry, she founded and ran her own consulting firm, Mosaik Strategies, for 16 years where she coached small business and nonprofit leaders to establish growth initiatives and build strategic relationships to achieve greater success. She created and implemented collaborative programs between companies and nonprofit organizations resulting in mutually beneficial relationships. The programs and principles she developed were featured in publications including the university textbook Fundraising Basics: A Complete Guide. While at Mosaik, she also partnered with other consulting firms to develop and facilitate diversity training.

Mikel began her career in marketing for a major retailer when she found herself gravitating toward the business side of the operations and returned to graduate school to earn her MBA. Straight out of graduate school, she was recruited by Intel Corporation where she managed multi-million-dollar projects and led various initiatives including one of the first Intel consulting teams involving human factors and computer science engineers hired by external companies to develop new software and applications for clients seeking ways to launch their products into ecommerce.  More specifically, she designed and executed the first-generation online ticketing website, allowing users to select their seats in any venue and purchase seats online.

In addition, she served as one of the founding members of the newly formed Intel Diversity Group, producing the company’s first annual Diversity Summit where she introduced the company’s diversity strategy to 70,000 employees.

In her spare time, Mikel enjoys running and practices Jhoon-Rhee style Tae Kwon Do. She and her husband have two daughters.
