CMC Bolsters its OSHA, MSHA, and Employment Practices in the Midwest with the Addition of Hema Steele – Another Former US Solicitor of Labor

Conn Maciel Carey LLP (CMC), a boutique law firm with national practices in labor and employment, workplace safety (OSHA and MSHA), and litigation, is pleased to announce that attorney Hema Steele has joined the firm’s Ohio team as Senior Counsel. She supports the firm’s OSHA, MSHA, and Labor and Employment practices from Cleveland, OH.

CMC’s Co-Managing Partner, Aaron Gelb, says “CMC is thrilled to have Hema join our team as she brings a fantastic mix of experience gained during 11 years as a solicitor with the U.S. Department of Labor in Region 5 and several years as a management side L&E attorney in private practice. She understands the government’s perspective, which will make her a particularly effective advocate when representing employers confronted with challenging matters involving workplace safety, labor, employment, wage & hour, and whistleblower claims. While Ms. Steele is the eighth firm attorney based in the Midwest, her practice will be national in scope.”

Ms. Steele is excited to join CMC. “Even while representing employers’ interests, I was impressed with firm members’ commitment to worker safety while ensuring employers understand their obligations. I was also drawn to CMC’s culture, where staff and attorneys have built relationships grounded in mutual respect, collegiality, and integrity.”

Having worked in government, Ms. Steele believes in partnering with OSHA, MSHA, and other agencies to find pragmatic, innovative solutions that balance keeping workers safe and addressing clients’ needs.

“Her relationships at the Department of Labor (DOL), and litigation experience, will serve our clients’ interests well in workplace safety and in labor and employment,” adds Nick Scala, Chair of the firm’s MSHA • Workplace Safety Practice Group and Partner in Charge of the Columbus, OH office. “We are excited about the potential this brings to help us continue to grow CMC’s practices in Ohio and throughout the Midwest.”

Ms. Steele’s talent and experience are welcome additions to the CMC team. The firm’s Labor • Employment Practice Chair, Kara Maciel, says “I am thrilled to welcome such an exceptional attorney to our firm. Hema’s depth of experience will be pivotal in augmenting our expertise in labor and employment law.”
