{"id":7989,"date":"2024-11-07T17:56:00","date_gmt":"2024-11-07T22:56:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/employerdefensereport.com\/?p=7989"},"modified":"2026-03-20T11:57:30","modified_gmt":"2026-03-20T15:57:30","slug":"an-update-on-minimum-wage-in-california","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.connmaciel.com\/employer-defense-report\/an-update-on-minimum-wage-in-california\/","title":{"rendered":"An Update on Minimum Wage in California"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As we approach the holiday season and New Year\u2019s Day, we wanted to provide employers with a brief update on what minimum wage requirements in California might be starting January 1, 2025.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Proposition 32<\/strong><br \/>\nProposition 32 was an initiative on the November 5, 2024 ballot in California. It would have raised the minimum wage to $18 per hour in 2025 for larger employers and in 2026 for all employers. Although the results are not official as of the writing of this blog article, it appears that the initiative is likely to fail.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Minimum Wage in 2025<\/strong><br \/>\nEven if Proposition 32 fails, the California minimum wage will still increase on January 1, 2025 pursuant to existing law. It is currently set to increase to $16.50 per hour for all employers.<\/p>\n<p>As always, employers should ensure compliance with any applicable local ordinances for<a href=\"http:\/\/employerdefensereport.connmaciel.stagingarea.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/11\/shutterstock_325467185-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Shutterstock 325467185 1 300x181\" class=\"wp-image-7996 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/employerdefensereport.connmaciel.stagingarea.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/11\/shutterstock_325467185-1-300x181.jpg\" alt=\"Shutterstock 325467185 1 300x181\" width=\"447\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.connmaciel.com\/employer-defense-report\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/11\/shutterstock_325467185-1-300x181.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.connmaciel.com\/employer-defense-report\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/11\/shutterstock_325467185-1-1024x617.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.connmaciel.com\/employer-defense-report\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/11\/shutterstock_325467185-1-768x463.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.connmaciel.com\/employer-defense-report\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/11\/shutterstock_325467185-1-1536x925.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.connmaciel.com\/employer-defense-report\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/11\/shutterstock_325467185-1-2048x1233.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.connmaciel.com\/employer-defense-report\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/11\/shutterstock_325467185-1-1680x1012.jpg 1680w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 447px) 100vw, 447px\" \/><\/a> enhanced minimum wage obligations.<br \/>\nFor example, the following municipalities have their own minimum wage requirements (this list is does not include all such local ordinances in California):<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Alameda<br \/>\n\u2022 Berkeley<br \/>\n\u2022 Daly City<br \/>\n\u2022 El Cerrito<br \/>\n\u2022 Emeryville<br \/>\n\u2022 Fremont<br \/>\n\u2022 Hayward<br \/>\n\u2022 Los Angeles<br \/>\n\u2022 Los Angeles County<br \/>\n\u2022 Novato<br \/>\n\u2022 Oakland<br \/>\n\u2022 Pasadena<br \/>\n\u2022 Redwood City<br \/>\n\u2022 San Diego<br \/>\n\u2022 San Francisco<br \/>\n\u2022 San Jose<br \/>\n\u2022 San Mateo<br \/>\n\u2022 San Mateo County<br \/>\n\u2022 Santa Clara<br \/>\n\u2022 Santa Monica<br \/>\n\u2022 Sonoma<br \/>\n\u2022 West Hollywood<\/p>\n<p>Finally, employers should also be aware of any industry-specific minimum wage requirements. For example, in April 2024, the minimum wage for some fast food workers increased to $20 per hour. In October 2024, the minimum wage increased for many workers in the health care industry.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Employer Takeaways<\/strong><br \/>\nAs employers in California already know, wage and hour law in the state is constantly evolving. Proposition 32 is just one example of how quickly the law can change, even when employers might have already planned for upcoming changes in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>With 2025 approaching, there is not a better time for employers to review their wage and hour policies and practices to ensure that they are prepared for new requirements and in compliance with current requirements.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As we approach the holiday season and New Year\u2019s Day, we wanted to provide employers with a brief update on what minimum wage requirements in California might be starting January 1, 2025.
